Prologue

What is Playback?

Playback Theater is a unique form of improvisational performance that celebrates the stories of all people. In Playback, members of the audience are invited to come forward and share their true, personal stories. Audiences have shared everything from past memories to future dreams, with a whole range of experiences in between. Actors then recreate these stories on the spot, through the art of improvised movement, music, dialogue, and imagery. Playback seeks to discover and honor the fantastic vitality inherent in every individual.

A Bit of History

The Playback form was originally developed in 1975 in New York State by Jo Salas and Jonathan Fox. It is now practiced in many languages by groups all over the world. Since 1995, international Playback festivals have been held in places as far away as Japan. Playback Theater Northwest (PTN) was founded in 1991.

Playback in Your Organization

One of the virtues of the Playback format is its versatility, and PTN is committed to bringing Playback to the greatest number of audiences possible. In addition to regular public performances, PTN also benefits the community through its private performances with clients that range from residents/visitors of senior and adult day centers to an audience of ex-offenders who have served prison terms and are reentering society.

Beyond performing, PTN also has teaching programs, including residencies in area schools, which empower young people with the skills of improvisation and the confidence that comes from their own storytelling—all while having an enormous amount of fun. Through the power of Playback, the shared experience of being human promotes a strong sense of community with any group.

Playback is appropriate for any function, including private parties and corporate events. Playback workshops and performances can celebrate success, process failure, build trust, and renew faith. Please contact us for more information on how Playback Theater Northwest can serve you and your event.
